Aircraft Structures Mechanic - "Aviation is getting bigger, faster and more advanced," said Brian Finnegan, president of the Aircraft Maintenance Professionals Association. "While major U.S. airlines struggle, general aviation companies and small jet and aircraft manufacturers are seeking new skills to work as aircraft mechanics as the current workforce ages."
"We see a lot of opportunities - they come back by chance," he says. With developments such as large aircraft and drones, the industry is becoming more sophisticated and requires mechanics who can keep up with the ever-changing technology.
Aircraft Structures Mechanic
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are currently 154,000 aircraft mechanics working in the United States, and the BLS divides the occupation into four categories.

Look for well-established schools that require at least 1,900 hours of instruction and have a placement record of 70 percent or higher, says Don Newton, director of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA). Newton recommends attending schools with higher than average hours. "You want to go beyond the basics," he says. "See what hands-on training they offer."
These schools provide students with classroom basics such as understanding electrical laws and reading schematics and hands-on lab work. "A good school incorporates the latest technology in addition to FAA requirements," Newton says.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required to enroll in aviation school, but no previous experience is required. "I've seen some kids with no mechanical experience do well," said Brian Tobias, a mechanical inspector appointed by the Federal Aviation Administration.
"If you want to be an aircraft mechanic, you can't just walk off the road," says Tobias. Therefore, you should try to get certified as soon as you complete your education. Although the background check is not necessarily a job requirement, it is preferred by employers. "The holder of a mechanic's certificate is relatively limited to working on certain types of aircraft or performing specific maintenance tasks," he says. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires 18 months of service experience for an airframe, powerplant, or avionics maintenance endorsement and 30 months for a combined airframe/powerplant endorsement.

Completion of an FAA-accredited mechanic school program may substitute for work experience. Attending one of America's 200 mechanical engineering schools is the most common way to enter the industry. However, veterans who show good work experience can try to get certified, as can those who have enough practical experience but no training.
The exam consists of a series of computer tests, followed by a day spent with an authorized examiner. The candidate will then work on a series of projects covering 44 topics ranging from small passenger aircraft to Boeing-sized aircraft.
Once you get your license, where you work depends on your needs. "In any part of the country and the world, you have major airlines, commuter airlines, engine manufacturers or landline operators," says Newton. You can work in line maintenance at airports, where you escort planes out of the gate, or you can work on helicopters, as part of a team on large planes or in a workshop where you repair small planes yourself. "Right now I'm seeing small carriers taking on new people for $14 to $15 an hour," Tobias says.
Wherever you go, don't expect to work 9 to 5. "The work is often outdoors and at night," says Finnegan. "Mechanics are athletes who climb ladders and work in small spaces. You have to get in shape."

Upon completion of training, you may be assigned to an aircraft squadron, aircraft carrier, naval air station, or other aviation shore facility in the United States or abroad.
Each time you are assigned to a new unit, you return to school for specialized training in unfamiliar equipment and aircraft. Promotional opportunities are available on a regular basis, but are competitive and performance-based.

In addition to providing professional credentials and certifications, technical and operational training for an aerospace structural mechanic can be converted into credit hours toward a bachelor's or associate's degree through the American Council on Education.
You can continue your education with undergraduate options such as the College Program and Tuition Assistance and the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
A high school diploma or its equivalent is required for the sailor and aircraft structural mechanic positions. You must also be a US citizen who meets security clearance requirements.
AM applicants must have the ability to use tools and equipment and the ability to perform detailed tasks and keep accurate records. You must also be able to communicate well with others and work well as part of a team.
Navy Job: Aviation Structural Mechanic
Important physical characteristics include normal use of the hands, a high level of fitness, and normal hearing and color perception.
General qualifications may differ depending on whether you are currently serving, have served in the past, or have not served in the past.
Serving as a part-time Reserve Sailor, you will perform your duties during scheduled exercise and training periods. During monthly exercises, Air Structural Mechanics in the Reserves usually work closer to home.
For annual training, you can serve anywhere in the world, including locations in the US, overseas, or in areas of greatest humanitarian need.
