Mach 5 Aircraft - Boeing's new hypersonic aircraft concept could act as a spiritual successor to the Mach 3 SR-71 Blackbird, a report from Popular Mechanics reveals.

This week, Boeing unveiled a model and artist's rendering of its delta-wing concept jet at the AIAA SciTech aviation forum.

An attack and reconnaissance aircraft could theoretically fly five times the speed of sound. This is due to the "waverider" configuration, where the aircraft uses its own shock waves generated during flight to increase lift and reduce drag.

According to Aviation Week, Boeing internally referred to the aircraft as "Valkyrie II", although Boeing has not yet released any significant official information and the aircraft is still in the concept stage.

Valkyrie II is an evolution of Boeing's 2018 concept, dubbed Valkyrie, for a hypersonic aircraft that could travel between London and New York in just two hours. The hypersonic concept has been compared to Lockheed Martin's own SR-72 design, which would be the literal successor to the SR-71 Blackbird.

Both the Lockheed Martin and Boeing designs use a combined cycle engine to reach Mach 3 before switching to a twin jet engine for acceleration to hypersonic speed. Lockheed Martin is partnering with Aerojet Rocketdyne to develop the engine, while Boeing is partnering with Orbital ATK.

Hermeus' Concept For A Mach 5 Business Jet

Lockheed Martin's SR-72, or "Son of the Blackbird," could make its first test flight in 2025 and is expected to reach speeds of Mach 6, or 4,603 miles per hour (7,400 km/h). The SR-71 Blackbird is the fastest manned aircraft in history, although it was retired by the United States Air Force in 1998. On the other hand, the SR-72 and Boeing's new hypersonic concept aircraft will likely be unmanned aerial vehicles.

China's hypersonic capabilities recently made headlines when the country launched a hypersonic missile with "advanced space capabilities," which surprised US officials. Meanwhile, last July, the US Air Force awarded a start-up called Hermeus a $60 million contract to build a prototype aircraft capable of flying at Mach 5 with just one engine over the next three years.

Researchers analyzed nearly 100 tattoo inks and found that ingredient labels were not accurate. They also discovered small molecules that are harmful to cells. An aerospace company called Hermeus on Thursday announced a contract with the US Air Force and the Presidential and Executive Directorate of Air Transportation to develop a hypersonic aircraft for the presidential fleet.

While the next Air Force One, a modified 747-8, will be delivered by Boeing next year, the Hermeus contract provides for its possible replacement.

Hermeus said it won the contract after designing, building and successfully testing a prototype engine that can accelerate the plane to Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound -- about 3,300 mph. Mach 5 represents the distinction between supersonic and hypersonic speeds.

Hermeus plans to build a demonstration vehicle in the next five years, with commercial jets expected in about a decade, Skyler Shuford, co-founder and chief operating officer, said in 2019. Its focus is on integrating Air Force requirements into aircraft designs.

Hermeus surfaced last year and announced plans to develop a Mach 5 aircraft that could fly from New York to Paris in about 90 minutes. Ars Technica reported in May 2019 that the company had raised its first round of funding, led by Khosla Ventures, who used it to develop a prototype. Hermeus said it would use a combined turbine engine for the propulsion system.

At the time, Hermeus said it planned to use mostly existing technology and materials to achieve hypersonic travel.

"With today's technology, we can make a vehicle fly that fast," said Glenn Case, co-founder and chief technology officer, in a video released this spring.

"We're not starting something great," Shuford told Ars Technica last year. "We want to do engineering, not science."
