Russian President Vladimir Putin is well aware that controlling the skies is the key to victory in Ukraine. Air superiority will allow Russia to protect its ground forces and easily attack Ukrainian forces from the air. So the air force of Ukraine is the first target of Russia. On February 24, the first day of the war, Russia attacked airports and air defense bases and attacked 25 cities across the country.

To effectively defend our territory, Ukraine needs at least one squadron of modern fighter jets such as the American-made F-16 or F-15. We estimate that our pilots will learn to fly these jets at a rapid rate of two to three weeks. This timeline is based on two factors.

First, today's extreme conditions lead to incredible levels of motivation. We have seen our pilots do the impossible as they defend their homes and their lands against Russian invaders. Now, the world is beginning to see what we knew from February 24. The Ukrainian resistance is the only hope to stop this war. Like most dictators, Putin exploits weakness and only responds with strength. And military strength needs the right weapon.
Currently, the US sends us Stingers, which have limited range and capabilities and, therefore, cannot eliminate most Russian threats. We have successfully used drones to attack Russian military positions; Unfortunately, these can only serve as complements to fighter jets and surface-based missile systems, not their replacements.
So, how does the Air Force of Ukraine continue to this day without the necessary tools to mount a successful air defense? Two abstract factors come to mind.
First, Ukrainian pilots are famous for their adaptability. The new training methods I implemented years ago prepared our pilots to think strategically, be flexible under pressure, and master new technologies with ease. On Russian social media from a news channel we monitor, the Russians are bragging that there is already a no-fly zone in Ukraine - enforced by Russia. They claimed that Ukrainian pilots could no longer leave the ground and that Ukraine's ground-based defense systems had been destroyed.
It's not true - yet. But this is the future our Western partners choose when they withhold much-needed aid. That's where we're going if our allies pretend we can protect our skies with Stingers instead of fighter jets and long-range ground-based defense systems.
