If you or a loved one is a member of the US military, you probably already know how the Service Members Civil Relief Act (SCRA) can help you get out of an apartment or rental car if you have a permanent modification of station (PCS) order or set.

But did you know that the same action protects you when you need to cancel your Internet, TV or phone services?

Amendments to the SCRA in Public Law 115-407, the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018, now allow military members to cancel their Internet, TV or cell phone and/or home phone service without penalty if you are deployed or transferred to at least 90 days to a new location where the same service is not provided.
To receive this benefit, you must contact your carrier's customer service department and notify them that you must cancel your services without penalty under the SCRA. You may be asked to provide copies of your placement documents.
Previously, some states had protections for service members who canceled their Internet, TV and/or phone service before the contract expired — but not all did. New legislation has now made these protections available across the country.
The law also protects against fines or being sent to court for breaking into your apartment or rental car.

With these changes to the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018, the law now provides relief to military members and their families. Many TV and ISPs require one- or two-year contracts to set up services, and often the hidden fees associated with breaking that contract are not clear and can run into the hundreds of dollars.
For example, many carriers have calculated cancellation fees (also called early termination fees or ETFs) based on the number of months you've had service. The closer you are to the end of the contract, the lower your cancellation fees will be. Other Internet and TV providers have set cancellation fees that can range from $120 to $400.
Note that you may also have the option to suspend your service. Canceling your service can be a good choice if you want to keep your current plan or promotional offer. Whichever path you take, it's important to know your legal protections under the SCRA.
