The platform, which is owned by Google, said Russia's invasion of Ukraine now falls under its violent incidents policy and offensive material will be removed.
A YouTube spokesman, Farshad Shadloo, said the blocking of the Russian outlets is consistent with that policy.
YouTube also said it is now removing content about Russia's invasion of Ukraine that violates its policy for material that "minimizes or downplays well-documented violent incidents." The Kremlin speaks of a "military special operation" and not of a war.
YouTube previously paused YouTube ads in Russia. Now it's expanding that to include all of the ways it monetizes the platform in Russia.
Ukraine Invasion: Youtube To Block Access To Rt And Sputnik Across Europe 'immediately'
Russian state media have labeled the restrictions placed on them by distributors, including app stores and other social media services, as unwarranted censorship.
"The blocking of YouTube is but another variant of a cruel attack on one of the fundamental principles of a democratic society - namely, freedom of the press," Sputnik said in a statement on Friday.
YouTube declined to say which and how many channels were blocked worldwide or if they would ever be restored.
Google employees had urged YouTube to take further punitive action against Russian channels, accusing them of spreading false stories about Ukraine's leadership and civilian deaths during the war, according to three employees.
Youtube Blocks Russian State Funded Media Channels Globally
The move comes as Russia takes an increasingly aggressive stance on US tech companies that have taken steps to curb Russian disinformation on their platforms.
Russia on Friday decided to block Instagram after parent company Meta announced it would allow calls for violence against Vladimir Putin and Russian soldiers involved in the invasion of Ukraine on the social media platform in Ukraine. The Russian government blocked access to Facebook last week. The lockdowns further limit most Russians' access to outside information about the war. WASHINGTON -- U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho), senior member of the Senate Relations Committee, met with John Roberts and Sandra Smith on America Reports today to discuss Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine and its impact on Americans.
"In the relationship space I work in, there aren't many things I can say with absolute certainty. But I can tell you with absolute certainty that China will do what is best for China. They don't care about Russia or anyone else. Why do they do that? Obviously they're doing this because they think they're going to be eligible for some sanctions next."
- Russians and Chinese have been in a relationship for 100 years. They are both autocracies and when you have autocrats running a country they are brothers and they think and act alike.”
How Youtube Keeps Broadcasting Inside Russia's Digital Iron Curtain
"I think it's Putin lying to himself. He knows what's going on. He watches Fox News. He watches CNN. He has access to the internet. He doesn't entirely trust the counselors to tell him what's going on. You'd have to be a complete idiot not to know what's happening on the battlefield in Ukraine. Everyone in the world knows what happens – he loses.”
"You can think that - a lot of people think that - but you just don't articulate it. Because first of all, it gets very personal with the leader of the country. And second, they suddenly realize that this is existential for them. And when people are in that position, they do bad and crazy things. It's just not something that should have been said.
"[Ukrainians] need more and they need it faster... So no, I'm not satisfied. I met Ukrainian MPs last night, some of them, and they are obviously urging us to do the same.”
“[Ukrainians] are fighting for the independence and sovereignty of their country. They're going to give their kids and grandkids something people can't buy, and those are the freedoms we Americans enjoy."
Muhlenberg To Host Ukraine Russia Relations Panel
“Prices rose well over a dollar before there was even talk of a Ukraine crisis. [The administration] must own it. I appreciate that they are beginning to realize how important this is to the American people. I wish they had done it a while ago. I saw them sign the closure of the XL pipeline within an hour of him taking the oath of office - that was 700,000 barrels a day. If it were open and operational right now just think where we would be. They own a good chunk of it, and they can't get away with it.”
"Energy security is absolutely critical to national defense and to the kind of lives we want to live... If the world is consuming 100 million barrels a day, that's not going to change overnight. And it has to be done, but it has to be done affordable and over a period of time that we can all live with.”
"In the relationship space I work in, there aren't many things I can say with absolute certainty. But I can tell you with absolute certainty that China will do what is best for China. They don't care about Russia or anyone else. Why do they do that? Obviously they're doing this because they think they're going to be in line for some sanctions next - that's natural.

Fact Check: Fake Images Show 'cnn' Reports On Ukraine That Never Happened
“I hear people say all the time. I think probably someone is lying to someone, but I think it's Putin lying to himself. He knows what's going on. He watches Fox News. He watches CNN. He has access to the internet. He doesn't really trust the advisors to tell him what's going on. You'd have to be a complete idiot not to know what's going on on the battlefield in Ukraine. Everyone in the world knows what's going on - they're losing. And the same with what is happening at home [in Russia]. We get all the reports here about the terrible conditions in Russia with closed banks, closed stock exchanges, all shops, especially American shops. He knows that. What he will do about it is another question.”
"The cat is out of the bag. I think people who don't work in the relationship field will say, "Hey, what's wrong with what he said?" Well, what he said was a clear rendering of 'we want regime change'. You don't - for too many reasons. You can think it - a lot of people think it - but you just don't articulate it. Because number one gets very personal with the head of state. And secondly, they suddenly realize that this is existential for them. And when people are in that position, they do bad and crazy things. It's just not something that should have been said. And you've seen the outbreak around the world doing it. It was a fork. The White House tried to back out, but you can't put a bullet back in the gun."
“I was on the side from the start that they need more and they need it faster and they needed it a while ago. So no, I'm not happy. I met Ukrainian MPs last night, some of them , and they are obviously urging us to do the same. I understand. These people are going through what we went through in 1776. They fight for the independence and sovereignty of their country. They will give some of this to their children and grandchildren. People cannot buy, and these are the freedoms that we Americans and many other people around the world enjoy.”
"There's no doubt about that. The American people aren't as gullible as the Russian people. On the very edge of that, there's certainly a price hike that's to blame. But look, prices have gone up well over a dollar before even one Ukraine crisis. They must have that. I appreciate that they are beginning to realize how important this is to the American people. I wish they had done it a while ago. I've seen them signed the shutdown of the XL pipeline within an hour of being sworn in
