And in recent weeks, the separatists have deployed more sophisticated weaponry to fight Ukrainian forces, as allegations of a Russian supplier mount.

The US State Department announced in early June that Russia had sent tanks to separatists in Ukraine. NATO satellite images show three T-64 tanks crossing the border near Snijne, Ukraine.
The T-64 has been decommissioned by the Russian military, although they are believed to be stored in southwestern Russia. The Ukrainian army has T-64 aircraft in its arsenal, leaving open the possibility of separatists taking control of them.
On June 20, a column of pro-Russian militants with two Russian T-64 tanks and several armored personnel carriers stands near Horlivka in the Donetsk region of Ukraine.
On June 30, the Ukrainian military captured a T-64 tank near Artemivsk in the Donetsk region, claiming that it came from Russian military reserves.

The rebels have been using shoulder-mounted man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) since June, when they began using them to shoot down Ukrainian warplanes.
According to one report, the insurgents shot down at least 10 aircraft, including five Indian Mi-24s, two Mi-8 helicopters, one An-2, one An-30 and a Ukrainian plane. Pro-Russian rebels claimed responsibility for downing two more Ukrainian Su-25 fighter jets on July 16.
The deadliest attack occurred on June 14, when pro-Russian separatists shot down a Ukrainian military transport plane, killing all 49 crew and soldiers on board.
Many of the aircraft are believed to have been shot down by MANPADS, but they may also have been taken out by larger and more sophisticated systems such as the Buk surface-to-air missile system (see below).

The BM-21 Grad is a truck-mounted multiple missile launcher developed by the Soviet Union. It is capable of launching unguided missiles with a range of 20-45 kilometers depending on the missiles used. Ukrainian and Russian military use Grady.
On July 11, pro-Russian separatists fired a barrage of Russian-made rockets at the Zelenopillya border crossing in Ukraine's Lugansk region, killing 23 soldiers and injuring nearly 100 others.
Russia's BM-21 Grad multiple launch missile system fired missiles during military exercises in the southern Volgograd region in April.
Since then, there have been multiple reports of Grad rocket launchers being used by rebels in Lugansk and Donetsk regions, which are located on Ukraine's eastern border with Russia.

In addition to the Grad, there were reports that a much more advanced missile launch system, the Tornado, had entered the theater. Ukrainian officials claimed that the Tornado system was used to attack Ukrainian forces from Russia on June 13. According to the Ukrainian military, 19 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the attack in Zelenopilya near the Russian border.

The Buk is a radar-guided missile system from the 1970s. He shoots 5.7 meters and 55 kilograms to a height of 25,000 meters. It is widely used in former Soviet republics, including Ukraine.
On June 29, the official Russian news agency ITAR-TASS reported that the rebels had taken control of the Buk system. The report did not say whether the system was taken from the Russian or Ukrainian military, only that the weapons system was taken over by the rebels.
The Buk is a complex missile system that requires multiple trained operators. The system usually includes four vehicles: a command post, a radar vehicle for target acquisition, a missile carrier vehicle (with its own targeting radar), and a support vehicle.
