Lwrc Di Upper - Operating with 100% reliability during testing, showing an extremely high level of skill in all areas and with an unparalleled level of craftsmanship, LWRC I may have just raised the bar for direct impact rifles.

One of the first reliable piston ARs I used was a LWRCI. The first 10.5 inch rod was sturdy, reliable and accurate (rare at the time). Early short-barreled ARs were generally spotty, especially when suppressed. Over-gassed, they were dirty, loud and noisy. The LWRCI was one of the toughest and toughest I have ever seen or used. After years of heavy use it was replaced by an SPC 6.8, the start of a whole new adventure. LWRCI also fixed this by addressing the magazine issues exhibited by the larger 6.8 SPC case. With both standard and short-barreled versions, they are completely reliable. Being able to test short-barreled versions of the Individual Carbine - PSD (Personal Security Detail) chambered in 5.56 NATO reminded me how well LWRCI rifles work. But patrol rifles and longer barrels require less piston design and the costs that go with it. For years, customers have been clamoring for LWRCI to build the same quality direct gas impingement AR, and they finally did with the LWRCI-DI 556.

LWRC I was one of the first to offer fully ambidextrous controls and they are all present on the DI.

Piston guns are excellent; they do things most DI guns simply don't. Short barrel piston ARs perform better and handle suppression easier. Unfortunately, they are expensive, can be heavy, and add parts and complexity. Most applications simply do not require a short barrel or suppressor. The vast majority of civilian applications (LE or otherwise) are simply satisfied with a 16 inch barrel with a simple direct impingement gas system. Simplicity in the field is key and nothing meets that need like a well-built AR with a proven direct impingement throttle system. The vast majority of ARs on the market today remain direct impact and probably always will be.

This rifle starts with LWRCI proven "double" forged receiver. Forged from 7075 aluminum, they are some of the strongest you can buy, with great attention to detail, consistent craftsmanship and uniform construction. Equipped with ambidextrous controls and an oversized trigger guard, they are good for use in all conditions. Magpul rubber coated MOE grip provides comfortable control. A compact LWRCI stock allows the LWRCI-DI 556 to be used with plate carriers or other service equipment. Internal components are military specification, including the trigger.

Hidden in the top is a cold forged 1:7" twist barrel with M4 cutout and a 5.56mm NATO chamber. Fluted for less weight and better cooling, it is covered with an A2 style flash hider. Constructed from 41V45 steel. it is stress relieved and coated with NiCorr for long life and corrosion resistance Gas is supplied to the updated DI bolt carrier cluster with a NiCorr coated gas tube.

The barrel is covered with a 15 inch rail specially designed for the DI rifle. Securely attached to the receiver, it keeps the barrel free-floating. Rails can be attached at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions. The continuous top rail facilitates Vue upgrades and additional accessories. LWRCI rails are strong and thin, adding less to the overall diameter and allowing you to add gear without bulk. Rail panels are supplied with their angled front handle. Two rails are included, a short one for the lights and an angled rail that includes a QD cup as well as bolt-on side covers. There is also a QD cup on the back of the angled front grip. Each rifle comes with a single PMAG Magpul 30 round.

Just as the red dot sights all but replaced iron sights on working ARs, low power optics are starting to gain popularity. The ability to identify your threat or target is imperative, and optics make this exponentially easier. Add age to the equation and it becomes more advantageous. Although I can still hit targets at 300 yards with a red dot, it is much easier with low power variable optics. The Accupoint from Trijicon is one of the most robust, reliable and simple systems available. Using a Mil-Dot reticle and fiber optic center dot, the Accupoint 1-6x24mm is equally at home from CQB out to 300 yards. Six forces are sufficient for most engagements with this rifle, facilitating accurate target identification and greater accuracy. With a 30 mm tube, it is light, short and very practical. It was mounted in an American Defense Manufacturing AD-Recon cantilever mount. Having used several over the years, they are strong, light, easy to use and easy to install. At a reasonable price, they offer an option for service or professional guns that won't break the bank.
